Celebrating Maritime Culture

In May: Exhibits, tours and more

April 19th, 2010

From whale hunting to whale watching, and fishing industries to the leisurely beach days of today’s tourism, life on Cape Cod has been defined by the Atlantic for centuries.

In Provincetown, a number of organizations dedicated to celebrating the Cape’s symbiosis with the ocean reopen their doors in May.

To celebrate this long marriage with the ocean, each year Cape Codders host the Maritime Days, a series of events honoring the various roles the sea has played in Cape history. From bow to stern, the whole length of Cape Cod’s nearly 600 miles of continuous coastline participates.

Maritime Days runs for the whole month of May, with many towns hosting exhibits, lectures, tours, sails and more. To check out this year’s schedule, and learn about special lodging deals, visit http://www.ecapechamber.com/MaritimeDays/.

The Province Lands Visitor Center of the Cape Cod National Seashore opens to offers visitors ranger-guided tours, films about seashore history and ecology, and breathtaking views of the dunes from its upper deck. Its bookstore also carries a wide range of books by historians and other authors that are difficult to find elsewhere.

This year the Provincetown Public Library is also hosting a special series of events for Maritime Days, including a maritime author forum and sea chantey singing. To find out about the library events, call 508.487.7094.

The Whydah Museum, which houses artifacts that have been recovered from the shipwreck of Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy’s pirate flotilla, also opens on MacMillan Wharf starting May 1.

Meanwhile, the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station, one of only 13 such stations still intact, and Race Point Lighthouse often begin offering tours during May. (Check out the links to stay on top of their plans.) And whale watches in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are offered daily with the Dolphin Fleet.
