A World of Asian Delights
Brought to you by Ying at the Gifford House
By Steve Desroches of Provincetown Magazine
July 2nd, 2009
Ying’s Restaurant is well known to year-rounders when visiting Hyannis on a shopping trip and to tourists swinging through to see the JFK Museum or taking the ferry to Nantucket. Restaurateur Tanida “Ying” Suriya Wong, is celebrating ten years at her Hyannis location with specials, but also by opening a Provincetown location.
 | “Everything is really healthy and all made fresh and from scratch. We use no MSG, no pre-cooked food.” |

Located at the Gifford House at 9 Carver Street, the Thai Sushi Café by Ying is filling the space formerly occupied by a Thai restaurant for the past two years. But in a short time she has redone the dining room, created a diverse and delicious menu, and trained a staff that is helpful, friendly, and attentive.
While a Thai restaurant, the menu choices feature other Asian offerings as well, mixed in with some other surprises, explains sushi chef and staff member Yvan Todoroff, who is spending his third summer on the Cape.
“The concept is a mix of sushi and Thai food, as well as an American breakfast with great European coffee in a nice atmosphere,” says Todoroff in the tastefully decorated dining room with nice lighting and soft jazz music playing. “Everything is really healthy and all made fresh and from scratch. We use no MSG, no pre-cooked food.”
The result is a wonderful meal with great offerings. The Thai fishcakes, filled with minced fish fillet and Thai spices fried and served with cucumbers, dressing, diced tomatoes, a bit of cilantro and topped with peanuts is a particularly tasty appetizer, as is the seaweed salad with ginger-olive dressing. The edamame is also particularly yummy.
One of the menu standouts is the yellow curry chicken. Prepared with either a mild curry, or the spicier Panang curry, this filling meal is made with coconut milk, sweet potato, potato, and a tender chicken breast in a generous curry sauce. Pan seared salmon is also especially good. But for Thai food fans, the Pad Thai is great and is prepared in a more sophisticated way than a run-of-the-mill Thai restaurant might offer.
This Pad Thai, (which is rice noodles pan-fried with bean sprouts, green onions, crushed peanuts, and spices), is covered with an egg omelet in a more traditional Thai presentation and is incredibly flavorful and memorable.
The freshness of the ingredients and the upscale kitchen practices are apparent in each dish, with crispiness, a variety of flavors and wonderful aromas, not to mention beautiful presentation.
Many Provincetown diners will be ecstatic with the extensive sushi menu, too.
“We are really excited with the new sushi bar,” says Todoroff. “There are a lot of options not usually found around here.”
With over 60 choices, the sushi menu includes traditional offerings, as well as cooked sushi for those not fond of raw fish, and more exotic items that incorporate fresh fruits or Asian spices. The popular Dragon Roll, which includes eight pieces, is incredible. Made with eel, avocado, cucumber, and shrimp wrapped in seaweed and rice and presented in the shape of a dragon, this offering is a menu standout. The tuna sushi topped with fresh strawberries is a wonderful surprise and offers an absolutely amazing burst of flavor.
For dessert, try the fried ice cream – a sizeable ball of vanilla covered with caramelized honey, sesame seeds, and strawberries. It is worth it, even if you are already stuffed!
The restaurant is open from May to November, opening at 8 a.m. for breakfast and closing at 10 p.m. weekdays and between 10:30 and 11 p.m. on weekends. On Sundays, brunch runs until 2 p.m. The outdoor patio will also open soon, once the warm and dry weather finally arrives. Plus, townies receive a 20 percent discount.
Dining atop Carver Street is a totally new experience with a new management and kitchen team, and it is highly recommended. The prices are reasonable, the restaurant inviting and warm, the staff friendly, and most importantly, the food is delicious.
Thai Sushi Café by Ying is located 9 Carver Street, inside the Gifford House Inn. They are open seven days a week for takeout, delivery, and dine-in service. For reservations and information call 508.487.1101; Delivery orders call 508.487.1135.
