Xmas gifts for less than twenty: Part Two

December 4th, 2009

Cooking is an awesome way to create Xmas gifts that are less than two sawbucks. Open up the cupboards, pull out some cookbooks, throw on an apron and let’s get cracking! In Diane Phillips book, “The Perfect Basket” (and who doesn’t want one?), she puts small items together to make one big package. Her ideas inspired me to create some Outer Cape versions.

With a dash of inspiration and a pound of love, twenty dollars can go far when creating great gifts that don’t break the bank.

Provincetown Christmas Morning Muffin Basket: Even if you’re no Julia or Julia, muffins are easy to make by the box or from scratch with Peter Hunt’s Cape Cod Cookbook. His blueberry and cranberry recipes are truly divine. Add some local jelly samples, cover with a fun dishtowel, don a santa hat and deliver. What a great way to start someone’s holiday!

Homey Christmas Eve Dinner: Put together a great meal in your own crock pot or get one super cheap at the thrift store. Chili, cornbread, and a bottle of red wine or cider will feed two to six hungry people for well under twenty smackers. Take it to your friends who are cooking Xmas dinner and see tears of gratitude.

Give me Greens Salad Lovers Bowl: Take a big bowl that you never use and put delicious micro greens, red onion sliced thin, some cherry tomatoes and viola, the beginning of a great meal. Add a loaf of garlic bread with a 10 for $10.00 salad dressing from the local Stop and Shop and you have a great lunch for two. Surprise a friend who is baking sweets and stay for dessert.

Sweets for the sweet Cookie Tin: What would the holidays be without cookies? Certainly not as fun! Make classic gingerbread men or try something new like Suspiros found in “Recipes from the Portuguese of Provincetown.” Rummage around for cookies tins or extra plates, wrap them in foil or paper, and add a bow. Have them ready for folks who drop by or to bring to your neighbors.

A Truly Cape Cod Gift: My favorite fisherman makes codfish cakes to give to his lucky friends and family. Boil about a pound of codfish with 2 large peeled and diced potatoes. Drain, flake and mash the mixture. Add one egg, cooked onions, garlic, salt, pepper and a tablespoon of chopped parsley. Shape into patties and roll in breadcrumbs. Fry in hot corn oil and drain on paper bags. When cooled, package these delectable morsels in tins or plastic with sheets of parchment or wax paper between rows. Add some tartar sauce and Portuguese rolls in a gift bag. Fishcakes will reheat beautifully for a gorgeous lunch from the sea.

With a dash of inspiration and a pound of love, twenty dollars can go far when creating great gifts that don’t break the bank.
