A Chocolate-Lover's Paradise

Fudge, Turtles, Truffles, and More Await

July 24th, 2006

Confectioners have been a staple in seaside towns since beach vacations became a popular national past time at the start of the 20th century. Saltwater taffy, lined up in colorful rows of flavors, is an obligatory purchase on any trip to the ocean’s edge. Likewise, lollipops, jawbreakers and a medley of other candy creations are the stuff of children’s daydreams on day trips. Fudge, though less location specific, has also come to be an expected sweet treat among visitors to beach towns.

A chocolate-lover’s mouthwatering paradise awaits along the length of Commercial Street.

Provincetown does a particularly good job of satisfying this demand for squares of rich heaven. After the sun’s chocolate-melting rays loose their midday strength, a chocolate-lover’s mouthwatering paradise awaits along the length of Commercial Street, inviting the truly diehard coca enthusiast to indulge in the liberation of a fudge-obsessed amble.

Moving from east to west, the first stop on the journey towards melting bliss is Purple Feather (322 Commercial Street), a purveyor of “fine chocolates and sexy sweets,” which offers a variety of beautiful hand-rolled truffles, turtles, fudges and other delectables, including adult erotic candies. Its chocolates are made at Broken Wheel Farm in Dracut, Massachusetts, using cream from a local dairy farmer. Consider being a bit adventurous and trying their spicy dark chocolate truffle, which is made with real peppers and offers quite a bite.

Only one candy is allowed though, unless you’re stocking up for later, because there are many other obligatory stops on this walk. Turner’s Ice Cream and Candy (309 Commercial Street), located at the base of MacMillan Wharf, offers saltwater taffy and a variety of fudges, which are made, as the counter attendant may tell you, by somebody’s Aunt Hilda in Eastham.

Continuing west, you will come across an intersection with two candy stores on opposite corners, both of which are a required stop. Cabot’s Candy (276 Commercial Street), which has been in business since 1927, features a wide selection of fudges, from peanut butter to penuche, some of which are so thick that they require double bites, as well as a huge variety of house-made candies, jellies, preserves, and saltwater taffies, including some sugar-free options. There is also a huge taffy-pulling machine on-site, which is in operation on some days.

Across the street, stands the Penney Patch (279 Commercial Street), which also carries a wide variety of homemade fudges and saltwater taffies, as well as an astonishing line-up of fun candies for the kids.

By this point, you might be feeling a bit full, but there are two more obligatory stops on this journey towards abandon. The Nut House (237 Commercial Street) has wonderful truffles and turtles and you should definitely try one of their chocolate-covered rice crispie pops. Located at 210 Commercial Street, the Provincetown Fudge Factory should also not be missed. Its fudges are incomparable and its house-made peanut butter cups are the perfect finish to any chocolate tasting. It also offers sugar-free fudges for the sugar sensitive.

Follow this walking guide and you’re guaranteed a chocolate high. Even if you can’t taste all these melting majesties at once, it’s fun to put together a sampling that will allow you to find your favorite fudge later.
