Winter Shopping Beats All

Deals and Quiet Make the Off-Season a Dream

January 7th, 2017

On first notice, Provincetown seems a bit darling. Small in size and dotted by cute Cape Cod style homes with their proudly steeped roofs and ubiquitous shingles, each one a bit different than the next, but all still cleaving to the style guidelines of Colonial Revivalism, the town looks the meaning of historic. But in truth, it is anything but quaint.

Commercial Street, the town’s main street, borders the harbor, the hunt for bargains is transformed into a leisurely, strolling experience on the edge of a beautiful body of water.

In addition to having one of the most diverse populations around, the town has also become quite a sophisticated shopping destination and many of the Cape Cod homes in town center have been converted into boutiques. Now boasting everything from the obligatory seaside fudge and taffy purveyors to leather stores, bookstores, designer clothing stores, jewelry stores, galleries and a miscellany of other retail shops, Provincetown is a great place for the discerning shopper, and this is even more true in the winter.

That’s right, the winter months are a fine time for the shopper to make their way to land’s end. Although it’s true that many of the town’s stores shut down for part of the winter season, many also stay open in the winter on the weekends. And they begin to reassess the dreams they once had about the value of their merchandise. Winter inventory must be moved to make way for new items in the summer after all and price tags in remote locations at this time of year often begin a miraculous descent that is sure to excite inveterate bargain hunters, as well as their brethren in training.

Even better, there are no crowds of other shoppers to interfere with your discount delight – no one to snatch the new bathing suit you glimpsed out from under you and no one to stand between you and your material self-realization. Shopping on a winter weekend in Provincetown is indeed a most simple and civil experience; summer’s multitudes are missing and, since Commercial Street, the town’s main street, borders the harbor, the hunt for bargains is transformed into a leisurely, strolling experience on the edge of a beautiful body of water.

What is more, many of Provincetown’s guesthouses and restaurants also offer winter discounts, making it possible for a visitor to pull off a relaxing weekend interlude at prices well below summer rates.
