Where the One-Of-A-Kind is Everywhere

September 10th, 2007

Anyone’s who has spent anytime in Provincetown knows that it is a special place – special in its beauty, special in its history, its diverse community and its independent arts culture.

The best part, though, is that all of this variety in sales and stores sits right next to each other on Commercial Street, housed in lovely homes from the 1800s, just a stone’s throw from the town’s harbor.

Although it’s not spoken of quite as often, Provincetown is also unique when it comes to shopping.

At a time when most places are starting to resemble one another, with all of the same stores crowding out small business, Provincetown’s Commercial Street presents a rare setting of real variety.

Almost all of the stores on Commercial Street are small businesses that are actually operated by local owners, who can often be found in their stores.

And this diversity of ownership translates into a very real individuality among the town’s stores, with each one offering visitors a new vision of personality.

While there are stores with luxurious items for the home, there are also fudge shops and candy shops. Next to hammock and kite shops, stand designer clothing stores for both men and women and art galleries. And along with stores filled with beachwear and sunglasses, the street presents more eclectic fare, such as shops showcasing the work of artisans, puzzles and jewelry from around the world.

Meanwhile, all of these different stores are located in close vicinity to one another and next to Provincetown’s beautiful harbor.

And what this means is that you can take your time exploring the wide range of stores on foot, finding respite whenever you wish on the town’s nearby beach, where you can enjoy views of the water, lighthouses and sailboats.

Or perhaps an early cocktail or a sidewalk snack at one of the many restaurants and bars that stand at the ready.

To find out more about the many diverse stores in Provincetown, peruse the listing categories at the top of this page or Provincetown.com’s shopping map.
