Hot New C Street Businesses

Notes from Land's End: July 18

July 18th, 2012

An ever-growing group of maverick people are leaving high profile jobs mid-career to open a fabulous business along Commercial Street. These savvy entrepreneurs are creating stores where beachside ambiance and urbane sensibilities meet.

An ever-growing group of maverick people are leaving high profile jobs mid-career to open a fabulous business along Commercial Street.

Owner Christine Horovitz has opened many a location for cosmetic companies like MAC while dreaming about the opportunity to bring the best of skin care and make-up to Provincetown with Kiss and Make Up at 357 Commercial. Fresh, minimalist and inviting, the well designed space is filled with exquisite men’s products as well as the hottest in women’s cosmetics.

Local ladies are snapping up the Stila Long Wear Lip Color ($20.00) and the Stila Smudge Pot gel eyeliner in Black ($21.25) to create a flawless version of the “cat-eye with red lip look” so popular this season.

Manager Tim Paquette recommends some “Morning After” bestsellers for our man friends - Menaji 911 Eye Gel ($36.00) to erase dark circles and puffiness, Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant ($18.00) for that fresh scent and Billy Jealousy Face Moisturizer ($30.00) to keep the skin carefree in spite of copious amounts of handcrafted vodka martinis.

Tim Convery, New York brand builder (Clinique and others), was so taken by our seaside community that he created Tim Scapes, a highly original clothing and accessory line that is a love letter back to the town.

“Think awe-inspiring souvenirs to take back home; t-shirts, blankets, totes, hoodies, and limited edition prints that all bear unique Provincetown art” says Manhattan Fashion Blogger Darabzine. Totes range from $25.00 to $40.00. An online shopping option is in the works. Until then, visit the store at 394 Commercial.

When I lived in Manhattan’s East Village, there was a raw juice place right on the way to work.

Sips & Lix, across from the Provincetown Post Office at 212 Commercial, reminded me of those days when I could duck into a small storefront for a quick blast of nutrition. Two people doing doubles stopped in for their favorites - THE 4:20 ($7.95), made of milk, oil, protein and hearts of the hemp plant with agave and banana and a GREEN WITH ENVY ($7.50), a combination of cucumber, kale, spinach and apple.

Owner Michelle Jaffe is all about antioxidant-infused juices and high-powered shakes and is thrilled to have locally loved vegan chef Star Chickaderis working at Sips & Lix every Monday, Thursday and Friday. Jaffe also owns I Dream of Gelato in The Aquarium Marketplace (207 Commercial) alongside other delish eateries that adjoin the bayside Aqua Bar (bartender Dante’s new perch) with its glorious view of the harbor.

A former philosophy professor from Arizona State U., Jackie Gately is now the President of Cookies U, new this year at the Aquarium, bringing years of discourse about ethics and living the good life to the fine art of making cookies. People are raving. I had the BEAR PAW ($2.50), a sugar cookie made with almonds for claws and a simply divine version of the always popular peanut butter cookie ($1.00).

The motto at Cookies U. is just sublime - Be nice. Have fun. Eat cookies.
