The Barenaked Lads.
Barenaked Lads do Provincetown
At the Post Office Cabaret
By Kahrin Deines
August 20th, 2007
They are indeed bare naked. But they are also talented actors, dancers and singers. They are the Barenaked Lads, who are performing at the Post Office Cabaret until September 15.
 | When they first hit the stage, it’s a dizzying experience as your eyes and mind try to adjust to a display of visual input that is not often beheld. |

When they first hit the stage, it’s a dizzying experience as your eyes and mind try to adjust to a display of visual input that is not often beheld. Should you look to their faces, the source of the song you are hearing, or should you let your eyes travel downwards and take in the sight of what every part of the male body, yes every, looks like when it’s in the midst of dance – this is for you to decide, but you will probably find yourself doing both. After all, most of us haven’t had the opportunity to see five male specimens at once.
It’s not all about the bodies, though. Indeed, after their opening numbers, which includes a particularly enthralling yoga skit that will put to rest any imaginings you’ve ever entertained in a Bikram class, the lads don clothing once again. It’s a move that emphasizes just how naked the very act of performance is at any moment because it doesn’t feel like you’re seeing any less. With clothes or without, these lads are giving it their all.
The subtraction and addition of clothing also adds to the show’s import. Woven together as a series of playful skits, it’s a lighthearted rollick that pokes fun at our obsession with sexuality, and our sexuality of obsession. As the clothes come and go, mockery is made of our prudish culture’s fetish with nudity. And while the boys proudly display their wares, which together comprise a diverse representation of the beauties of the male form, the lone female troupe member is always fully clothed. It’s a nice bit of role reversal that points out the obvious – after all, it’s hard to get through the grocery store without seeing a nearly naked woman on some bit of media – but it’s visually arresting simply because you just never see five naked men with one clothed woman.
Meanwhile, the skits and songs soft tackle our sexual mores as well. Current sex icons like Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are shamed in song for their shenanigans. One cast member sings a solo about the Bisexual Blues – a very nicely done number that has him fretting about how to choose between her and him as he lists his obsessions with each of their forms. And a volleyball match that pits the guys against the “gals” devolves into a strip game, with the obligatory ribbings about size and strength.
All in all, it’s a romp of flesh and fun that offers plenty of laughs along with the eye candy. The Barenaked Lads are performing at the Post Office Cabaret, which is located at 303 Commercial Street, until September 15.
