The Big Taboo Festival
Male Vocalists Take Center Stage
By Kahrin Deines
September 18th, 2007
A man on stage singing songs from the heart, some of which are about his love for other men – it would be quite taboo in some settings. But not in Provincetown, which will once again be the location for the Big Taboo Festival, a festival for gay, male performing songwriters that made its debut last year.

Organized by Peter Donnelly, a Provincetown-based singer and songwriter, the festival will present a number of accomplished singer-songwriters over the course of three days. The festival will begin on September 21 with a performance by Donnelly, along with Martin Swinger, a performer who blends originals and standards on stage and the host of the popular cable concert series “ALIVE! From Johnson Hall” that is broadcast in Maine.
Next up, Tom Wilson Weinberg and Ernie Lijoi will perform later in the evening. Both are singer-songwriters who have released a number of albums of their music, in addition to composing for musical theater productions.

There will also be two concerts on September 22, with Aiden James and Gregory Douglass performing at 7 p.m. and Brian King and Rick Berlin at 9:30 p.m. James and Douglass are both very young artists, whose work has been met with fast acclaim. Meanwhile, King and Berlin are both Boston-based artists who have performed with bands, in addition to their solo work.
The Big Taboo Festival will come to a close on September 23 with a Jam Session with all of the performers between 1 and 4 p.m.
Donnelly, the festival’s organizer, is also the host of “Coffeehouse at the Mews,” a popular off-season open-mic event. He also founded the musical trio Comfortable Shoes, which performed for five summers in Provincetown, and he has released two recordings of original songs, “A Sure Thing” and “Express Café.”
