Savaged by Ghosts and Ghouls
At Ghost Town, Spooky Bear Weekend and More
October 24th, 2009
Provincetown does anything involving costumes well, and Halloween is no exception. For this year’s All Hallows Eve, a number of tricks and treats are taking place.

One of them promises blood-curdling screams, pirates and a frightful encounter with centuries-old ghosts.
Now, to set the scene: “On the fateful night of October 31, 1736, Provincetown went from being a prosperous town of the living to a frightful town of the dead. It was then that a dense bank of fog rolled in under the black, moonless night sky, giving pirate Captain Davy Flint the opportunity he had been waiting for.”
So reads the ghoulish story being enacted at Ghost Town, a haunted experience with live actors taking place at Provincetown’s Aquarium Mall. Ghost Town – once full of life, now overrun by the dead – is a 15-minute encounter with the vengeful spirits of the town inhabitants that were savagely slaughtered by Captain Flint and his crew of rapscallions.
Ghost host Mayor McGhoul will lead those brave enough through an experience of their wrath, which returns every Halloween as the angry ghosts return to claim back their town. Ghost Town will be open from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 and 31 for those aged 13 and older. Those aged 12 and younger can attend from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 31.
The Provincetown Business Guild has also organized a number of other Halloween events for the weekend, including a haunted walk on Winthrop Street, a screening of the 1925 film Phantom of the Opera at the Schoolhouse Gallery, a pumpkin patch raffle, haunted dune tours and more.
Numerous parties are taking place as well. At The Crown and Anchor, there will be a Spooky Bear Party and Costume Contest at The Paramount Nightclub on Oct. 31, as well as a Rocky Horror Picture Show on Oct. 30. On Halloween, the Vault is also hosting a Halloween Bear Blast between 3 and 6 p.m. The events are part of the annual Spooky Bear weekend lineup, so you can expect to find many frighteningly handsome and burly men.
The Boatslip is also presenting its last tea dance of the season on Halloween, with extended hours to please the ghosts and ghouls.
And a celebration of fright is taking place at the A-House, with host Thirsty Burlington and DJ David LaSalle.
Meanwhile, the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill will have music by The Funky Soul Train Man, Matty Dread, along with a benefit auction of works and a pumpkin carving contest. And John Waters’ film Polyester is playing at the Provincetown Theater.
