Cape Cod Camp: “Women Behind Bars”

February 14th, 2010

When Patrick Falco promises to “make you a star”, he means it. His directorial intensity and focus brings out the best in others, with award-winning productions of “House of Blue Leaves”¸ “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” and “Take Me Out” to his credit. I couldn’t wait for opening night of Falco’s production of “Women Behind Bars” at WHAT from February 12 through the 28th.

Don’t pass this one by in your winter haze. Go to “Women Behind Bars.”

Written by Tom Eyen, of “Dreamgirl” fame, the play takes place in The Women’s House of Correction in Greenwich Village 1952 – 1959. The story unfolds with the incarceration of the innocent Mary Eleanor. Deftly played by Braunwyn Jackett, Mary is wrongly accused of armed robbery and in for seven years. She is thrown into the group of prison women with Pauline (Pearlene) as their warden. A role garnered by Divine in the original production, Pearlene plays the role of a dominating lesbian warden with jaded camp and a huge stage presence. The other inmates form an ensemble cast that is very cohesive onstage. Anita Cocktail (Cherrie), Tanya Hide (Blanche) and Scott Hayes (Granny) beautifully add the gender blending of drag as theater that Provincetown is famous for.

Outstanding as Gloria, Gwen Kazlouska-Noyes is the group’s lifer and ringleader. She is the epitome of the 50’s tough girl, with perfect timing and an amazing wig, designed by the masterful costume designer Carol Sherry. Melissa Nussbaum plays the complex role of Guadalope with the perfect blend of spice and sorrow. Jo Jo (Darlene Van Alstyne) adds a sultry cool to the mix while inmate Ida (Jane MacDonald) is a frightening arsonist on the edge of sanity.

Louise (Susan Modrak), the warden’s masochistic assistant, surprises us as she turns the tables on the warden, while Mary deals with her betraying husband Paul (Brian Carlson). Meanwhile, the doctor (Beau Jackett), wanting to do well but causing disaster, is marvelously costumed and brings an electricity to the scene.

Susan Grilli deserves our applause and admiration for her outstanding year round theatrical productions through her prolific company, Provincetown Counter-Productions.

Reserve your seat with Box Office Manager Katie Quigley at WHAT by telephone (508-349-6835) or go online to www.what.org.
