WOMR Birthday Bash
Celebrate 28 with Provincetown's Outermost
March 14th, 2010
It’s not the big three-o yet, but 28 years is a long time for a fiercely independent, community-run radio station to thrive on the airwaves.
 | WOMR’s birthday bash takes place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on March 19. Good food, libations and a stellar lineup, including Mary J Martin, Toast and Jam, The Rev and Friends, The Rip-It-Ups and many more awaits. |

That’s right, it’s time to celebrate the 28th birthday of WOMR Outermost Community Radio. The b-day party takes place all day long on March 19 with a performer lineup that will be broadcast to fans the world over.
First broadcast over the airwaves in March 1982, WOMR is a sound representation of the Outer Cape’s individualistic yet community-minded culture. One moment it offers Leggs Up with Lady Di, the next a freewheeling discussion of politics and the next the sounds of pop-punk-garage.
While the Clear Channel’s of the world eat up more and more of the frequency band, broadcasting a monoculture defined by advertisers, community-driven radio stations such as WOMR have become nearly extinct.
To have so many members of a community sharing their interests and their passions on the airwaves is a unique blessing. To know that anyone is welcome to contribute to the programming reaffirms the belief that a small few can make a difference and be heard.

WOMR 92.1 was first broadcast on March 21, 1982 with 1,000 watts. In 1995, it upped its signal to 6,000 watts. The brainchild of a band of ‘70s radio visionaries, it has been an entirely non-commercial, community-operated radio station since its first broadcast.
