A Week For Women

Provincetown’s 28th Annual Women’s Week Highlights

October 8th, 2012

Provincetown’s 28th Annual Women’s Week Highlights

“there is a feeling in the air that you are surrounded by women who have come to Provincetown to celebrate community and camaraderie!”

It’s Women’s Week in Provincetown, ladies! Pack up your curiosity, dancing shoes, intellect, and sense of humor and bring them down to the premier event for women in Massachusetts! For this one week in October, your days will be jam-packed with activities for your mind, body and spirit, and nights filled with music, laughter and fun!

There will be over 150 different events, to include workshops, harbor cruises, walking tours, yoga classes, a craft fair, films at Water’s Edge Cinema, parties, plays and performances by many popular singers and comediennes. The festivities also include a Community Dinner on Tuesday night, which is a celebration of their annual Woman of the Year Award and an opportunity to see Women's Week performers do a bit of their shows. The dinner this year, held at the Provincetown Inn, honors Irene Rabinowitz, Executive Director of Helping Our Women (HOW). Tickets are available at the Women’s Week website. Later in the week, come showcase your talents at a women-only version of “American Idol,” on October 11th!

Over the years, a lesbian literary festival has grown up inside Women's Week, and there are a great number of readings, panel discussions, and book signings going on during the week. The Golden Crown Literary Society will host a marathon book reading event on Friday at Sage Inn and Lounge that will feature over 20 authors and their works.
Kate Clinton's Touch Football Classic, an annual tradition held on Thursday at noon, will bring hundreds of women to the Bas-Relief to participate or watch as Performers vs. Visitors creates hilarious entertainment for all!
A partial list of performers entertaining eager audiences include comediennes Jennie McNulty, Suzanne Westenhoefer, Jessica Kirson, and Poppy Champlin and singer-songwriters Cris Williamson, Karen Grenier and Zoe Lewis. The incomparable Suede -- with Fred Boyle on piano and Rich Hill on bass-- will be sharing her “Dangerous Mood” with audiences on October 12th and 13th and Provincetown’s favorite Latina comic Mimi Gonzalez will hold court at WayDowntown on October 10-13th at 9 p.m. Last but not least, Michelle Vought, internationally-renowned soprano, brings her gender-bending one-woman show “Madame Monsieur” to the UU Church on October 12th at 5 p.m.

Finally, there are benefit events such as a Casino Night at Club Purgatory in the Gifford House on Thursday, October 11th at 7:30 pm to benefit Helping Our Women. Blackjack anyone? Also, on October 12th, Provincetown Town Hall will host a Silent Auction at 3 pm and performance of the Clare Boothe Luce classic play “The Women,” at 6 pm to benefit Provincetown Cares. The women in this play are THE original Housewives of New York, and the wisecracks fly like campfire sparks!

It all started in 1984, when a group of female inn owners were thinking of a way to bring together women in October. That first year, they held a Women’s Clambake. Now, 28 years later, Women’s Week, begins Monday October 9th and runs through Sunday October 15th. According to Lynn Mogell, coordinator of Women’s Week and co-owner of the Heritage Inn on Center Street, the best part of Women’s Week is “there is a feeling in the air that you are surrounded by women who have come to Provincetown to celebrate community and camaraderie!”
