Laughter, Dance and Wildlife

July 18th, 2013

Check out this sampling of hot Summer happenings!

The week culminates with a ''Whale Extravaganza'' featuring a silent auction and entertainment by a number of drag queens.

In the entertainments category, we can't ignore our inimitable Scarbie! In its 8th season, she brings her touching, inspiring and funny show "Lip-Schtick" to the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, Thursday thru Sunday nights. This tour de force presents the stories of two main characters: Scarbie an aging showgirl with a personality disorder, and David, who tells of growing up gay in a loving an supportive family environment. It evolves through seven characters and eleven costume changes right on stage. The show reminds us how we are all basically the same at heart in our human experience, and is, according to star David Scarbie Mitchell, “suitable for all ages, lifestyles, genders and abilities”. Scarbie is also the hostess of Drag Bingo at the Meeting House on Wednesday nights, should you wish to enjoy a little gambling with your entertainment!

If you've mastered the art of laughing in between bites of food, then glide on over to Victor's restaurant and enjoy the side splitting antics of your hostess, drag queen Shady Pines at their Sunday Drag Brunch from 10 am to 2 pm. The staff dress up as well, and performs elaborate routines in between serving clients. It's a campy, over-the-top and sure to make your Sunday brunch both a fabulous food and entertainment experience.

Why not enjoy the arts and nature all in one evening? If you like that idea, check out the Cape Dance Festival at the Province Lands Amphitheater on July 27th at 6 pm. Artists confirmed for this year's festival include Paul Taylor Dance Company, Project Moves Dance Company, CorbinDances, Lady Luck Burlesque, Lorraine Chapman the Company, Yesid Lopez, Catherine Cabeen, Justin Prescott and Nelly van Bommel/NØA Dance. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, so you can get extra pleasure knowing your night of entertainment will benefit Cape residents living with AIDS. Because the Festival's goal is to raise $10,000 for ASGCC, instead of "tickets," the Festival requests a variety of donation levels, which will include not only admission to the event, but a variety of "perks" based on the amount you donate!

For events that educate and entertain all ages, why not come down for the 3rd Annual Whale Week offered by the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS)? From July 27-August 3rd, you can enjoy activities like seal and whale watching, bike and kayak tours, moonlight hikes, and a variety of events for children. Many of the events are free but require registration, so visit the PCCS website for further details. The week culminates with a "Whale Extravaganza" event at Town Hall on August 1st, featuring a silent auction and entertainment by a number of drag queens including stars Jinx Monsoon, Raja Gemini and Tammie Brown from the television show "RuPaul's Drag Race"! It will be a night to remember to benefit PCCS and the World Wildlife Fund, two very worthy environmental nonprofits! Tickets start at $25 and are available at the Extravaganza web site.
