Mid-September Creative Soul

September 2nd, 2013

The second week of September, while more relaxed than the frenetic pace of summer, is by no means dull! At this time of year, everybody kicks back a bit to enjoy a slightly slower pace, and to revel in the afterglow….that is, the Third Annual Afterglow Alternative Performance Arts Festival, from the 9th to the 15th! The festival brings to Provincetown both renowned and under-the-radar innovative stage artists evolving the world of live performance.

Lady Rizo, a comedienne and chanteuse revives the genre by creating vintage arrangements & theatrical explorations of pop songs from every decade.

The week-long event starts with the benefit Opening Party at the Harbor Lounge, followed by a Variety Show of Festival Stars at the Crown & Anchor on the Monday the 9th. Come sample delicious goodies provided by 141 Bradford Natural Market, fresh shucked oysters and special drinks and cocktails and have a chance to mingle with some of the entertainers performing in town during the week!

Most performances are headquartered at the Crown and Anchor entertainment complex, multiple show options each night. Some of the performers you can enjoy include:

STARSKY + COX first began presenting their "Cosmic Cabaret" at Elmo in New York in 2005, regaling audiences with head-spinning tales of their shared exploits growing up mystic in a seemingly mundane world, singing signature songs that are at turns, loungey, funky, funny and punky, and hosting a roster of touted performers. They have performed at Oberon/ART, Ars Nova, The Zipper Factory and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.

Mx Justin Vivian Bond is a writer, singer, painter, and performance artist, who has performed internationally for over 20 years, selling out such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House, and multiple extended runs at The Soho Theater in London’s West End.

Lady Rizo, a comedienne and chanteuse revives the genre by creating vintage arrangements & theatrical explorations of pop songs from every decade. Lady Rizo (nee Amelia Zirin-Brown) co-created the cult caburlesque spectacular Lady Rizo & the Assettes in 2005. In January 2010 she won her first Grammy on a duet with acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma that was released on a Holiday album featuring Diana Krall, James Taylor and Alison Krauss among others. She also sings and records with multi-platinum recording artist Moby and was nominated for an MVPA for the choreography the video for the single New York, New York featuring Debbie Harry.

Penny Arcade, called "the queen of underground performance", brings her show "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" to town, giving audiences an improvisational sampler woven from among her ten funny and insightful full-length works, including Bitch!Dyke!Faghag!Whore!, Bad Reputation, LaMiseria, Love, Sex and Sanity, and New York Values. Her show on September 15th at 5:00 pm is a benefit for Provincetown's HELPING OUR WOMEN (HOW).

Other artists performing during the week include singer Amber Martin, performing the best songs created by singer-songwriter Laura Nyro; writer and comedian Mike Albo; Molly Pope and Max Steele; singer-actress Erin Markey; pianist Matt Ray; composer-lyricist-performer Lance Horne; and many others.

Shows not to miss before they close include Electra's "Living the Legends" show and Thirsty Burlington's "Stars" show, both at the Post Office Cabaret. Final shows are Thursday, the 12th through Sunday the 15th, at 8 pm and 9:30 pm respectively. Both Scott Townsend (Thirsty Burlington's alter ego) and Electra are both long-time celebrity impersonators who are known as some of the best in the business, who have performed all over the country to adoring audiences for 20 and 30 years, and these will be their final shows of the season!

If you prefer to dance, the Boatslip Resort will still be holding weekend Tea Dances from 4-7 pm, with DJ MaryAlice spinning on
