Celebrate Thanksgiving in the Original Pilgrim's Landing!

November 7th, 2013

Come down the day before Thanksgiving, and start off your season with the 103rd Annual Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument, on Wednesday November 27th from 5-7 pm. You don't want to miss this Provincetown tradition that celebrates the Pilgrims' FIRST landing in America at Provincetown on November 11, 1620. This year, the theme of the event is “Called to the Sea,” honoring current and past members of Provincetown's fishing community and their heritage. Admission is free, refreshments will be provided by the Provincetown Business Guild, and singer Peter Donnelly and pianist John Thomas will perform!

If shopping is a part of your post-Turkey day tradition, we have a variety of options that are much more unique than the mall!

Need help working up an appetite? You can start out Thanksgiving with the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot, a 5K road race to benefit the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). Registration takes place at 7:30 am at the Sandcastle Resort, the race begins at 9 am, runs to PAAM, then back to the Sandcastle. Registration forms are available on their website and only costs $20. Creativity is always encouraged in Provincetown, so feel free to wear a Pilgrim hat or turkey outfit if you are so inclined!

After the race, indulge in an effort-free holiday dinner at any of a number of fine restaurants, but make sure to make a reservation NOW so you're not left out! Whether you go for the five-course dinner menu of The Red Inn, Crowne Pointe's traditional turkey dinner (other choices available) with a view of the Monument dressed in holiday lights, or a more informal buffet (with a gorgeous harbor view) at Fanizzi's, you'll definitely find a place to provide all the enjoyment of your holiday without all the hard work! Those mavericks who either want to choose their own meal, or those who want a vegetarian dinner, can opt for Napi's, which will offer their full menu, with a variety of vegetarian choices (their wild mushroom ravioli is absolutely wonderful)!

If shopping is a part of your post-Turkey day tradition, we have a variety of options that are much more unique than the mall! You can find great gift choices all around town, since many of the stores are having end-of-season sales and holiday specials, and the UU Meetinghouse will be holding a holiday Crafts Fair both Friday and Saturday, with gifts to satisfy every member of your family!

Check out the Annual Casino Night hosted by the Provincetown Business Guild and the Crown and Anchor! Play a round of blackjack, ride the roulette wheel, spin the money wheel and more in a glittery evening with your friends! If gambling's not your bag, then Saturday offers you the anticipation and pleasures of the Annual Lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree. Now in its 10th year, Provincetown artist Julian Popko and family build the unique tree right in the heart of Provincetown's Lopes Square. Stacked with over 100 real lobster traps borrowed from local lobster men, the tree rises over 2 stories and is lit with thousands of holiday lights glowing with cheer! Enjoy free hot cocoa and cookies and join the crowd in counting down as the giant tree topper is lifted and then lowered onto the tall 'tree'.

Later in the evening on Saturday , catch a special holiday edition of our famed “Illusions” Drag Revue night at the Crown and Anchor!

If you want an outdoor walk consider Beech Forest, as well as Herring Cove or Race Point beaches. A walk in nature’s beauty is the perfect way to spend some of your day.
