April Happenings

April Is Blooming!

April 8th, 2014

The daffodils, crocus and hyacinth are beginning to bud, and baby birds have arrived to flutter through the trees! It's a special season, full of blooming new adventures and happenings!

If you have not visited this winter, and you want an outdoor adventure, you should know the right whales are back in the Bay!

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum started off the spring on April 1st, with a fascinating new exhibit entitled “Forgotten Port,” which pays homage to Provincetown's early history and its heyday as a whaling port. In tandem with its lucrative cod fishery, whaling in Provincetown made it, by 1860, one of the wealthiest communities in Massachusetts. The exhibit features tools and artifacts from whaling ships, photos, art, whale bones and more. Also, catch “Whaling Days,” the only film made of a whaling voyage aboard the “Viola”!

The Provincetown Theater will be brightening the creative landscape from April 10-13th with their 2014 Spring Playwrights’ Festival! The festival features seven 10-minute plays written by select playwrights from the New England area, and showcases nonprofessional productions of seven winning scripts chosen from their Playwrights Contest submissions. This year, the festival will feature “The Curious Sofa”, inspired by the work of Cape Cod’s Edward Gorey. A blue sofa will be the set piece of each play. Plays will be directed by noted local-area directors including Margaret VanSant,, Bragan Thomas, Roger Chauvette and Alison Hyder, among others. Suggested donation for attending is $10, and show times are 7:30 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, with a Sunday matinee at 3:00 pm.

Do your tastes run to the girlish, glittery and glamorous? Then check out the Miss Gay Massachusetts USofA Pageant weekend at the Paramount nightclub on April 12-13! On Friday the 12th, head down at 8:30 pm to “The Stars of Massachusetts in Revue,” where past and present stars of Miss Gay Massachusetts USofA pageants strut their stuff in this star-studded drag extravaganza! Then on Saturday the 13th, come to the actual pageant event at 8:00 pm! The Miss Gay Massachusetts USofA & the Miss Gay New England USofA Pageants are combined in one amazing evening of entertainment, the theme of which is “Old Hollywood.” Winners will go on to represent the state and the region at the National Competition held in Texas in May. Come out and support your favorite! Ticket information for both events is available by calling SNIP Salon at 508-487-3500.

Finally, if you have not visited this winter, and you want an outdoor adventure, you should know the right whales are back in the Bay! Although whale watches don't start for another two weeks or so, people have reported whale sightings off both Race Point and Herring Cove, so bring down a sturdy pair of shoes, binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, and prepared to be awed by the power and grace of these rare mammals as they surface feed, play and blow spray! Don't wait too long, now – according to the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, the “rights” will only linger through April, before they seek their summer feeding grounds to the north.

When you finish, relax and talk about your cool encounters over dinner at any of several restaurant already open for the season! Fanizzi's, the Central House at Crown and Anchor, Bayside Betsy's, Napi's, Bistro at Crowne Pointe and Victor's are just a few that are open this month.
