Family, Arts and Culture

June 13th, 2014

Mid-June signals Provincetown's entry to high summer! The pace of activities speeds up, as well as the variety of events to appeal to any and all visitors! Arts and culture are two of the main events this month.

The defining honor of the Festival is its ''Filmmaker on the Edge Award,'' honoring outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision in film-making.

June 18th marks the beginning of the 16th Annual Provincetown International Film Festival! The 5-day event presents a wide array of American and international narrative features, documentaries and short films, and makes a particular point to honor and preserve Provincetown's rich and diverse history as an arts colony, Portuguese fishing village, and gay and lesbian mecca-while never forgetting the area's original Native American inhabitants. The defining honor of the Festival is its "Filmmaker on the Edge Award," honoring outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision in film-making and given to a film artist whose admirable body of work pushes the boundaries of the medium. This year's recipient is David Cronenberg, director of such films as Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, and 1980s horror classics like The Fly and Videodrome. Other award recipients include actress Patricia Clarkson for Excellence in Acting, and veteran actress Debra Winger for the Faith Hubley Memorial Achievement Award. There will be film screenings in multiple locations around town of documentaries, short films, special feature film screenings, and narrative films, as well as “Meet the Honorees” events, parties at the Crown and Anchor and Town Hall, and more. See the website for a full schedule and to purchase tickets and passes!
