Later July in Provincetown

July 15th, 2014

As the days of summer continue let's get into them with gusto! There's a lot going on! For a taste of colonial and maritime history, take a tour or a sail on the Kalmar Nyckel, a full-scale, faithful re-creation of the original flagship that founded the colony of New Sweden on the Delaware in the 1630s! This sea-going “good will ambassador” for the state of Delaware is also a floating classroom, and was built about 200 yards downstream from the site of the original ship’s first landing at “the Rocks” in March of 1638.

Prefer a high energy, feel-good show that will recharge your batteries? Check out Prom Queens.

The new Kalmar Nyckel sails daily from April to November, voyaging over 3,000 nautical miles each year. The ship is served by a crew of 300 active volunteers and USCG-certified officers, including the ship’s captain, a relief captain, first mate, and second mate/lead educator. From now until July 27th, you can experience the history and stunning beauty of a “tall ship” yourself.

Runners and walkers, get a fun workout and benefit the Aids Support Group of Cape Cod on July 20th, in their 6th Annual 5K Walk/Run. Walk or run from the Harbor Hotel, out onto McMillan Wharf, and up to the finish line at Provincetown Inn. Registration is $35, which includes a race T-shirt, official number and timing services and breakfast at the finish line. Pre-register at FirstGiving.com or the morning of the event at 7:00am outside the Harbor Hotel, 698 Commercial Street. Walkers' start time is 8:00 am and runners' start time is 8:30 am. Please show up at least a half an hour before your start time to pick up your bib if you preregister. Prizes will be awarded for the top fundraisers as well as the top three runners!

Want some smooth jazz? Head to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for Bart Weisman's Summer Jazz Series, featuring renowned vocalist Shawnn Monteiro on July 23rd at 6 pm! Prefer a high energy, feel-good show that will recharge your batteries? Check out Prom Queens, an original rock musical showing at the Crown and Anchor on July 20th and 27th! This upbeat, very funny story about a woman's struggle in the music industry, is full of original tunes written for this play, by Dana McCoy, Jennifer Schanke and Christina Cass.

The Crown has tons of fun upcoming July performances, including The Atomic Bombshells (burlesque), Kate Clinton and Vicki Shaw (comedy), a two-night engagement with international recording artist Helen Reddy, a one-night-only show by Joey Arias, the well-known New York performance artist, cabaret singer and drag artist, and much more!

At the end of the month, there are TWO festivals...for kids and families of all ages!
Family Week is sponsored by the Family Equality Council, and Whale Week is organized by the Provincetown Center of Coastal Studies. Each offers a generous variety of events! Family week includes outdoor games, social gatherings based on region for adults, kids and families, daily Kidapalooza (3-8) and Youth Adventures (8-12) activities for children, clambakes, variety shows and much more. Some events occur concurrently with Whale Week, providing environmental explorations walks for 8-12 year olds. Events scheduled for Whale Week include a lecture, whale photography workshop, arts and crafts games for kids 5-12, and the highlight of the event, the Homemade Boat Races on July 28th! Special Whale Week events are in addition to PCCS' regular summer events, which include seal walks, tidal flats explorations, kayak tours and their Maine Lecture Series!

Come enjoy what the rest of July offers!
