Late August Happenings

August 15th, 2014

It's hard to believe we're coming into mid-August already, but before the routines of school season and autumn work schedules, there's still a lot of great celebration here on the Cape's tip!

Performers include Kathy Kosins, a jazz vocalist from Michigan, Dan Vannatter, a returning vocalist from Pittsburgh, and the Cape's very own Cape Cod Jazz Quintet

Are you a jazz aficionado? Come on down for the 10th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival on Saturday August 16th! You can hear some of the hottest jazz on the East Coast! Performers from the U.S., Canada, U.K., Europe, and New Zealand have all appeared at their concerts in Provincetown and Cotuit, and the Festival donates a portion of their proceeds to some great charities! Considered by many to be part of their summer jazz circuit, it's sandwiched between the Newport Jazz Festival and the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston in September. The Cotuit concert on August 18th is already sold out, so order your tickets immediately for the Provincetown concert at Town Hall! Performers include Kathy Kosins, a jazz vocalist from Michigan, Dan Vannatter, a returning vocalist from Pittsburgh, and the Cape's very own Cape Cod Jazz Quintet with - Steve Ahern (trumpet & flute), Bruce Abbott (sax & flute), Fred Boyle (piano), Ron Ormsby (bass) and Bart Weisman (drums).

The 16th is also the beginning of Provincetown's biggest week-long party, known as Carnival. The theme this year is “Comic Book Capers,” so bring your favorite comics character costume and join in the fun. It's a week of non-stop activity which includes a costume ball, “Aquaman's” pool party, a “Scooby-Doo” Inn Stroll tour, a “Richie Rich” vendor fair at the Bas-Relief park, the “Archie and Veronica” sunset party boat cruise on the 19th, and a comedy show at Town Hall on the 20th by Carnival parade Grand Marshal, television actress and comedienne Caroline Rhea! There are many themed parties at clubs round town, including the A-House, the Crown and Anchor, and Club Purgatory, as well. See their web site for info and tickets.

Some great performers are appearing in town during Carnival and immediately following it. On August 18-19th, the amazing Broadway singer-actress Linda Eder returns to town for two shows at the Crown and Anchor, as part of their entertainment series to benefit The Trevor Project. Also at the Crown, on August 24-25th Broadway lovers get a trifecta with three legendary musical leading ladies! Andrea McArdle was the youngest Tony Award nominee ever when she charmed audiences as that lovable orphan in Annie, beginning a fabled career. Donna McKenzie lit up the stage with music and a mirror in “A Chorus Line”, and Faith Prince breathed new life into Broadway revivals of “Guys & Dolls” and “Bells Are Ringing”! Pianist and musical director John McDaniel (from the Rosie O'Donnell show) accompanies the trio on piano. You won't want to miss any of these lovely virtuosos!

Art lovers, it's high season for a gallery stroll, and the weekend of August 22-24 might just be the time! Enjoy a leisurely day perusing our many galleries, indulge your own artistic tendencies with a tour of the National Seashore with Art's Dune Tours (bring your camera and capture our unique Cape light), and on Saturday the 23rd, stop in at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for their 100th Birthday Bash! The party starts for members at PAAM at 3pm, and the public is invited to join the festivities at 4pm. They'll be celebrating 100 years of inspiration with special speakers, a champagne toast, birthday cake, and a few surprises! Also, check out their latest exhibition, Recent Gifts I, Featuring Significant Gifts from the Robert Duffy Collection, which opens August 15th.
