Let Us Entertain You, Provincetown Style

August 17th, 2014

Who doesn’t love a great performance? There are plenty of choices: female impersonation, comedians, spoofs, parodies and a surprisingly remarkable string quartet.Let’s take a walk down Commercial Street and see who’s making us laugh, cry or both!

Provincetown is a place where you can go to the beach during the day and see great shows at night. A bohemian paradise!

Grotta Bar

The Grotta Bar at Local 186, owned by local restaurateurs Eric Jansen and Gullermo Yingling, hosts “Scream Along with Billy,” now in its seventh year. Billy Hough of the punk rock sensation Garage Doors screams and sings with Sue Goldberg (Space Pussies and Dirty Blonde), regaling us about the history of rock and roll weekly on Saturday nights. It’s has a loyal and fun following like writer Michael Cunningham and AMP Gallery’s Debbie Nadolney.

186 Commercial

Art House

A former movie theater, the complex was transformed by the enterprising Ben deRuyter into a two stage theater with an eatery (currently Blondie’s Burgers) and bar. Mark Cortale Productions has brought in the vivacious and talented Varla Jean Merman, Broadway @ The Art House with the fantastic Seth Rudesky and the remarkable singing string quarter, Well-Strung. This year’s sleeper production was “Golden Gals” starring Varla Jean Merman, Ryan Landry with Brookly Shaffer, Brian Johnston and Olive Another.

Atlantic House

Known worldwide as the A-House, this two-century old bar is part of any entertainment crawl along Commercial. The iconic spot hosts Ryan Landry, creator of parody plays like “The Gulls,” and his famous “Showgirls,” Provincetown’s original talent and variety show for fierce talent weekly on Monday nights.

6 Masonic Place

The Crown & Anchor

The Crown & Anchor, owned and operated by Rick Murray, offers much entertainment with shows like Sandra Bernhard’s “Sandy Land” and the glamorous Atomic Bombshells in the Paramount Room. The Crown is also home to Provincetown’s newest talent and variety show, Audition, in association with Ritzina Productions & Jim Lande. There is a wonderful cabaret room, where comedian Kate Clinton brings down the house with her refreshing brand of comedy and Dina Martina is absolutely hilarious.

In the Central House Restaurant, locally loved Bobby Wetherbee holds court around a piano to a devoted following for sing-a-longs.

247 Commercial Street

Velvet Lounge and Cabaret

Local/International Zoe Lewis & the Bootleggers appears at this dance club/cabaret with “Speakeasy,” a lovely evening of Jazz from the 20’s and 30’s. There is a Bulgarian Night, one of the highlights of the week for Provincetown’s work force, and other events. The restaurants on the upper level, John Dough, with a bird’s eyes view of Commerical Street, and the exotic Saki, with its Far East fare, add to the mystique.
258 Commercial Street

Post Office Café

This season brings back the acerbic Khris Francis performing in the restaurant with his great voice and biting wit. Have a nosh (except Mondays) and prepare to get roasted. A cult following will remember Francis from his infamous Town House days. Upstairs, where the laughs are infectious, is “the man of a thousand ladies,” female impersonator Electra! Perennial favorite Poppy-Ann Champlin is “Poppin’ Off” and Kristen Becker is one funny dyke comic.
303 Commercial Street

Sage Inn and Lounge

Recently renovated, the lounge at the Sage Inn has periodic entertainment like Adam Weinstock’s production of “Cooking with the Calamari Sisters,” a national act about two Brooklyn sisters, with rave reviews and standing ovations.
