Set Sail to the Outer Cape

Bring Your Own Vessel to Provincetown

March 28th, 2008

Perhaps it’s the free life of the sea for you and you’d like to bring your own vessel to the beautiful waters surrounding the Outer Cape area.

Provincetown's Harbor Master can be reached at 508.487.7030.

If so, don’t hesitate to set sail.

Private vessels are welcome in Provincetown’s sheltered harbor, which is a federally designated “Harbor of Refuge.”

Visitors can anchor to the east or west of the breakwater in the harbor, but not behind it. If anchoring to the west, visitors are advised to stay well out of the fairway. Also keep in mind that the Provincetown Harbor has a 10-foot tidal range.

The breakwater is perpendicular to the end of MacMillan Pier.

The town does not provide temporary moorings to recreational vessels, but rental moorings – for the season or for shorter stays – are available for visitors through both Flyer’s and Provincetown Moorings.

Flyer’s can be reached at 508.487.0581, ext. 201, or on Channel 11. Provincetown Moorings can be reached at 508.487.0571, or on Channel 09.

Permanent moorings can be arranged through the Harbormaster, with the required permit and fee payment.

Dinghy dock permits are also available through the Harbormaster on a seasonal basis. Visitors without permits who are on anchorage can dock their dinghy for a total of seven hours.

Rental slips also can be reserved with the privately run Provincetown Marina at 508.487.0571, or on Channel 09.

Fuel is available at a CITGO gas dock on the far side of Fishermen’s Wharf, which lies to the immediate west of MacMillan Pier. And the town offers pump-outs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.

Vessels can be launched into the harbor at the West End Parking Lot.

Rex McKinsey, Provincetown’s Harbormaster, can be reached at 508.487.7030 or on Channel 16.
The Provincetown Public Pier Corporation’s Web site is also a good source of information.
