Classic Cars and James Bond

At the Annual Yankee Lambda Car Club Weekend

September 3rd, 2007

Cultures have a way of overlapping in Provincetown. Here, on any given day of the summer, you might see in one short walk down Commercial Street a drag performer, an artist working “em plein air,” a newly married same sex couple, a street musician with a xylophone, or a fisherman heading out to the pier.

The highlight of the weekend will occur on September 8 when there is a car show at the Pilgrim Monument and then a parade along Commercial Street.

In this same vein of blending, early in September you will find row upon row of classic cars at the base of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum as history meets up with the hobbyists of the Yankee Chapter Lambda Car Club, a car club for gay people in the New England area.

An annual event, the Yankee Lambda weekend is now in its 12th year and will take place between September 6 and 9, with the theme of “Shaken, Not Stirred!” In tribute to Ian Fleming and James Bond, participants in this year’s event are invited to costume themselves as a character from one of the Bond films or outfit their cars with some kind of Bond-inspired gadgetry.

The weekend offers car enthusiasts a number of opportunities to vaunt their motorized prize and admire the other assembled classics. It also includes many social events, such as martini parties, brunches, and a “Drive-to Lunch.” The highlight of the weekend will occur on September 8 when there is a car show at the Pilgrim Monument and then a parade along Commercial Street.

The Yankee Chapter Lambda Car Club is a chapter of the Lambda Car Club International, a gay classic car owner’s society that was founded in 1981 and today has thousands of members. Members of the club need only have an interest in classic automobiles. Ownership of a classic car is not required.
