What's On the Spring Horizon?

Events and Activities in April and May

March 28th, 2008

No matter what the groundhog decides, winter is going out of style. Spring will follow fast on its heels, as quick as its name implies. And then summer, the favorite season for most Cape Cod visitors, will be here to kick up the heat.

Pull out the calendar and the planners, and get ready to make travel plans. Here’s a look at what’s coming up this spring.

Despite summer’s popularity, spring does have its devotees on Cape Cod, and for good reason too. The crowds are lighter, the weather’s milder and there are many great things to do.

So pull out the calendar and the planners, and get ready to make travel plans, because here’s a look at what’s coming up this spring:

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum – a favorite with visitors of every ilk – will reopen for 2008 on April 1. As a pair, the monument and the museum offer a combination of history and activity that make for a blend pleasing to every age or interest level. While the museum tells the story of Provincetown’s colorful past through a large selection of artifacts and artwork, the nearby monument stands at the ready for the more action-hungry, offering anyone willing to climb its 252-feet worth of stairs breathtaking views at the top.

Meanwhile, April is also the month when another kind of visitor shows up at land’s end – the whales – and boats begin taking would-be whale watchers out to their feeding grounds in mid-April. The whale watches are an extraordinary experience during any month, but the spring and fall in particular are known for record whale sightings.

With the advent of May, the Province Lands of the Cape Cod National Seashore beckon. Although beautiful year-round, the area becomes more visitor-friendly at the start of May when the Province Lands Visitor Center reopens. The center offers exhibits, movies and literature about the Province Lands, as well as ranger-guided tours.

May is also when Provincetown’s themed weekends and festivals begin. At the start of the month, the annual Gays for Patsy Spring Stomp will take place, bringing contra dance fans together for a weekend of dance instruction and fun. And in mid-May, the popular Single Women’s Weekend will take place, with dance parties, performers and other events for the ladies.
