Equal Marriage Rights for All
Provincetown Businesses Prepare for Wedding Visitors

“We’re going to Provincetown and we’re going to get married” – it’s been a wait of four years, but now gay and lesbian couples from outside of Massachusetts can prepare to sing this song as loud as the residents of the Bay state.

In July, Massachusetts took steps towards giving non-residents the same equal marriage rights as residents when lawmakers voted to repeal the law standing in the way.
Although same-sex marriage has been legal here since 2004, an old state law was dusted off by then-governor Mitt Romney to prevent Massachusetts’ clerks from marrying out-of-state couples. Not everyone listened to Romney, though – keep in mind this is a man who is on record worrying that Massachusetts might become “the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage.”

Notably, the Provincetown Town Clerk and a few others took a stand and refused to apply separate standards to straight and same-sex couples from out-of-state.
What better place to wed as a visitor now that it’s set to become truly legal than in Provincetown, which has supported the rights of same-sex couples from all over since the start.
In anticipation of the recent change in law, Provincetown’s businesses have been readying themselves to make sure visiting couples can find everything they need for their special day at the end of the Cape.
The Brass Key Guesthouse, in particular, has devoted extra attention to its wedding services. The inn has invested more than $100,000 to create a special events area that is now available to host intimate affairs for groups of 50 or less. Located within the inn’s stunning grounds, the new area features lush landscaping, sweeping stone staircases and a large white pergola under which couples can exchange their vows.
In partnership with it’s sister property, the Crowne Pointe Historic Inn and Spa, the Brass Key is now able to offer champagne toasts, a full bar selection and passed appetizers prepared by the Crowne Pointe’s award-winning Bistro.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies, the Crowne Pointe’s antique 1930 Ford Model A Woody Station Wagon is available to whisk the couple off into the sunset.
