Police estimated as many as 75,000 people attended last Thursday’s Carnival Parade. Commercial Street was lined, sometimes ten or more deep almost from the beginning of the route to the end.

This year’s theme was Jungle Fantasy and you never saw so many buff guys in fur loin cloths or gorgeous gals in leopard skin. There were big game hunters, cannibals, animals and even a couple of floats fashioned after The African Queen.
Over 80 groups took part. Floats belched confetti and the gyrations of participants were second to none. A couple of UPS drivers backed their truck on a side street for a great viewing spot. The cries of “throw me some beads” built as the parade made its way from the Cape Inn at the far East End of town toward the Coast Guard Station at Franklin St. And toward the end there were reports of parts of floats being removed as souvenirs by the throngs on the streets.
The Provincetown Business Guild that sponsors the parade declared it a huge success, which it was. Bits of monkey fur and peacock feathers were still blowing around the streets on Saturday.
