Notes from Land's End: Aug. 23
It's CARNIVAL!
By Laura Shabott
August 23rd, 2010
I stepped out of the Boatslip on Carnival Parade Day to a swell of 50,000 people on Commercial Street dressed in leopard prints, cat hennas with skimpy suits, tails, grass skirts and coconut bras. Excitement was in the air; folks throwing beads to the cheering crowd from their second floor apartment, people packing the streets, porches and sidewalks waiting for the parade.
 | The brainchild of the Provincetown Business Guild, this year’s Carnival deserves tons of applause for a rocking week with well over 20 events and shows. |

This year’s Jungle Fantasy theme hit a chord in the party unconscious with wild costumes and stellar floats. Scantily clad Tarzans and Janes danced to the beat with elephants, snake charmers and monkeys. It made for a wild and fantastic parade.
Nick Robertson, Executive Director of the Provincetown Business Guild, announced the 2010 awards in an exceptional year of entries including:
People's Choice Award: Bubala's Restaurant, “Curse of the Black Mamba”
Best Large Float: Marc Jacobs with “An Elephant You Won't Easily Forget”
Best Small Float: Provincetown Woodworks, “Castaway”
Best Walking Entry, Kathy Cote & Ann McGuire Group with “Safari Sisters,
Most Fun Float: Crown and Anchor with “Jungle Beat – Turning Up the Heat”
The brainchild of the Provincetown Business Guild, this year’s Carnival deserves tons of applause for a rocking week with well over 20 events and shows. No vacancy signs were everywhere; shops, restaurants and bars were packed with record crowds here in town to celebrate.
Established in 1978 to promote and support gay tourism, the PBG has the support of over 200 businesses. You can visit them at 3 Freeman Street #2, Monday through Friday, 10am to 2pm. Or visit their kick butt website Provincetown Business Guild and on facebook.
