Carnival Week Glitz and Glamour!

August 8th, 2013

One of the annual traditions in town is "Carnival", which takes place August 18-24, 2013, and is celebrating its 35 year. Last year’s theme of “A Space Odyssey” was chock-full of aliens, astronauts and other unworldly delights -- the only thing missing was Chewbacca the Wookie. This year’s theme is “Viva Las Vegas” with all of the glitz, glitter and electricity of any Sin City show. Visitors are encouraged to wear their most outrageous outfits, and you can likely expect to see numerous incarnations of Elvis, Wane Newton, the Rat Pack and more. In fact, at the Costume Ball on August 19th (at the Boatslip Resort), you are encouraged to "don't be yourself!"

During Carnival Week The Crown and Anchor will play host to comedienne Pam Ann and drag diva Paige Turner for limited engagements.

The high point of the week for many is the Carnival Parade down Commercial Street. An estimated 100,000 people will line the streets to enjoy the costumes, music, and dancing, as well as to catch the beads and other goodies tossed from the floats! Make sure to catch the last float of the parade, which every year announces the theme of the following year’s Carnival.

Of course, you're not strictly limited to "Carnival" events, unless you want to be. There is still a lot of entertainment to be found. For example, Tony-award-winning actress Christine Ebersole checks into the Art House for a two-night engagement on August 17-18. The Broadway star, acclaimed for her roles as Dorothy Black in the revival of "42nd Street" and Edith Beale in "Grey Gardens," has also had leading roles in plays such as Gore Vidal’s "The Best Man", and the recent revival of Noel Coward’s "Blithe Spirit". She has also appeared in numerous television shows including "Law and Order: SVU", "Will and Grace," and "Royal Pains," and films such as "Tootsie" and "Amadeus".

At the Post Office Cabaret, you 'll get your socks knocked off by THE ATOMIC BOMBSHELLS, Seattle’s professional Burlesque troupe, as they present a show that celebrates this outrageous and titillating art form with good humor and classic style. Originally hailing from the sultry swamps of New Orleans, The Atomic Bombshells return to Provincetown with their irresistible blend of old-school glamorous striptease, drag, dance, and campy cabaret for their 6th season! This show has something for everyone, and has often been described as the most unique event in town. Come see for yourself how The Atomic Bombshells entertain audiences with the celebrated New Orleans tradition of burlesque.

During Carnival Week, the Crown and Anchor will play host to comedienne "Pam Ann" (aka Caroline Reid), and drag diva Paige Turner for limited engagements as well. In her "Nonstop to Paradise" show on August 19th and 20th, gutsy curvaceous air-hostess Pam Ann takes passengers on a rollicking journey from check-in to, hopefully, landing. She pokes fun at air travel, the quirks of some of the biggest airlines and some of the stereotypes held about flight attendants everywhere. She mixes camp, culture, humor, fabulousness and a bit of slapstick into an outrageous in-flight adventure! Drag queen Paige Turner appears for four performances, on August 20-23. Her shows are described as a cocktail of mayhem, audience participation, and foolishness, and she mixes live vocals with lip synching and a song selection that everyone will respond to!

Finally the irrepressible singer Suede will be performing on Wednesday the 21st at the Crown and Anchor at 7 pm, bringing her fabulous blend of sophisticated pop/jazz, naughty blues and heart-melting love songs. She always leaves her audience wanting more and her mantra to us, her fans, is "bring me newbies!" If you haven't seen her perform, you MUST.

During the day, why not tour some of our lovely inns? On Friday the 23rd, you can join the "Going to the Chapel Inn Stroll" stopping in at the Aerie House, John Randall House, Sunset Inn, White Wind Inn, and the Brass Key/Crowne Point Inn complex.

Lots of fun, talent, glitz and glamour for Carnival Week! Don't we all need a little stardust now and then?
