Carnival 2013

Viva Las Vegas

September 26th, 2013

Standing outside Wired Puppy coffee shop on Commercial Street in the afternoon of August 22nd, a soft drizzle began to fall. It didn't dampen the spirits of the crowd, however, as more and more onlookers gathered on either side of the road in anticipation of the annual Carnival Parade.

It was impossible not to smile while watching the spectacle, and perhaps even dance a little (or a lot).

A mail truck slowly made its way down the street, at which point a young man in the crowd who apparently couldn't contain his excitement any longer burst out with a loud "YEAH!" and applauded. The mail carrier laughed, smiled and waved as more joined in the applause.

A few minutes later Provincetown police cars drove through, sirens flashing, signalling the beginning of the parade. From that moment on, the street was transformed into a raucous, colorful party. The carnival theme was Viva Las Vegas, and floats passed by carrying Elvis (several of them, in fact), various circus performers, glittering drag queens, and men carrying large stuffed polar bears and tigers.

It was impossible not to smile while watching the spectacle, and perhaps even dance a little (or a lot).

A large float decorated as a pirate ship sailed through, full of half-dressed swashbucklers rocking out to Daft Punk. A young boy in the crowd, aged 8 or 9, jumped up and down shouting, "Give me beads! Give me beads!" to each performer within earshot. They happily obliged, and before long the boy's neck was weighed down with dozens of sparkling jewels.

The 2013 Carnival parade was a unique and wonderful event, and one that will not be easily forgotten. For those who may have missed it, fear not, for there is always next year to look forward to, and in the meantime, you can check out some photos to keep yourself entertained here Carnival Photos
