Sail Away!

Sail Away!

In summer, there's nothing like the freedom of a day under sail, with the sun shining brightly and the wind and sea spray in your hair!  High summer in Provincetown is the best time to do it, and we have numerous charter boats to satisfy anyone craving “sea time”!

SeaSalt Charters offers private whale watching and fishing trips out of Provincetown, and is  owned and operated by the Avellar family, pioneers of Whale Watching on Cape Cod, New England, and the entire East Coast. SeaSalt Charters provides a unique opportunity to explore the whales’ feeding and nursing grounds of Stellwagen Bank(just a few miles north of Provincetown) on a private, comfortable boat with just you, your family, and friends. Operated by some of the most experienced, licensed whale watch captains in the world, you are assured of a memorable and meaningful experience. With thousands of whale watch trips and dozens of years of experience under their belts, these captains know where to find the most active whales, whether they are spy-hopping, flipper-flapping, surface feeding, tail-lobbing, babysitting their calves–or if you’re lucky- breaching!   This summer, they're also offering split-charter or public whale watches, so parties of only 2-3 people can now share the boat with another group, making it much more affordable!  They also offer great fishing charters too!

After a brief hiatus, the Schooner Hindu is back sailing Cape Cod waters with two two-hour day sails, a sunset sail, and private charters for a morning, a full day, or a sunset.  They also host weddings and private parties! Built in 1925 at East Boothbay Maine and modeled after a Grand Banks fishing schooner, it sailed the waters of Cape Cod Bay for 54 years.  It's 79 feet long and seats 35, although on sunset sails, they limit passenger load to 22 for a more intimate environment.  Owned and extensively restored by the Rowan family of Key West, the captain Joshua Rowan is a seasoned captain and the owner's son.  It carries a crew of 10, with occasional guest crew members as well.  For a sail replete with the romance of a bygone era, you can book online at their website for regularly scheduled sails, or call for information on private charters.

The newest entry into the ocean cruising business in Provincetown is Moment Sailing Adventures!  During the summer months, take a 2, 4, 6, or 8 hour day sail around Provincetown Harbor and Cape Cod Bay.  Experience wildlife, beaches, lighthouses, and sunsets of this New England gem. Each sailing yacht (named Moment and Momento) takes up to six guests and both can be chartered at once and sail together to increase your capacity for large groups. For the more adventurous, take a two day overnight sailing trip to Plymouth and Wellfleet!

I've always admired a 30-foot cutter rigged cruiser called Moondance II, owned by my casual pals Rosemary and Sue, who run Dog Gone Sailing Charters!  A trip with “Captain Ro” and crew is small and intimate (max. 6 passengers).  You can make a reservation on their website for a 1 ½ hour “shrimp sail, a full day trip to Stellwagen Bank to see whales, a sunset sail, a very intimate wedding with additional packages, and more.  Dog Gone Sailing also welcomes you to cruise with your canine pal, or if you prefer to leave Poochie at home, you might garner a cuddle from “Mini-Mate,” a Malti-Poo who's the boat's official mascot!
