An Exhibition by Dr. Brian O'Malley

PROVINCE LANDS

In Seaford High School, on Long Island, I was the camera nerd. I did most of the newspaper and yearbook photos, and spent long hours in my dark(!)-room developing and printing.

In my last school year, the decision for college was between my obvious ability and fascination with the natural sciences, and my enjoyment of photography. I decided that if I made photography my life’s work, it would become just work, rather than something I enjoyed.

So, I trained as a Biologist, and then as a Physician.

It has been my great life satisfaction to have been a part of this community for fifty-three years, as a Primary Care Internal Medicine doc in Provincetown, until my retirement in 2017. During those very busy years, I was always making photographic images, but not printing them myself. While my black and white darkroom had helped me survive Medical School in Brooklyn, it didn’t travel with me to Boston, or Provincetown. I depended on others for those many years to envision and present what I had seen, when they printed my works. Sometimes that worked out, but never to my full satisfaction.

When I discovered the freedom of digital photography and of making prints myself with those digital captures, it was a rediscovery of the old joy of developing an image, then holding the finished print in-hand.

Working and living year-round on the Outer Cape has given me the opportunity to explore this beautiful place in all its seasons. Rambling with my camera is one of my true escapes.

This exhibition consists entirely of photographs made in my explorations of the Province Lands portion of the Cape Cod National Seashore. It is a compact but richly textured world, of seashore, dunes, forests and ponds - one surprisingly rich in color. It is my pleasure to share these views.
